Micro-Review: The Lion King

Jon Favreau’s The Lion King isn’t the worst of Disney’s live-action remakes. It’s beautiful and impressive on a technical level, but it’s also unnecessary and uninspired. It’s nearly a shot-for-shot remake with an almost identical script. The 1994 film was less than 90 minutes long, yet this version is almost a full 2 hours. Favreau adds nothing new to the story, so the extra runtime drags the film down. The animals may look lifelike, but the film itself feels lifeless. It lacks the spirit, energy, and emotion of the original. The voice cast might be a selling point for some moviegoers, but there’s something very off about watching CGI animals talk and sing. You’re better off saving time and money and revisiting the original movie instead.
